Project description

BABICHacoustics assisted Bohlin Cywinski Jackson with the acoustical design for a new five-story, 90,000 SF multi-disciplinary building for Carnegie Mellon University to support programs in their College of Engineering, School of Computer Science, and Mellon College of Science. This sustainable building is pursuing LEED certification.

The building was funded in part by a gift from Tata Consultancy Services, a global IT and business solutions company. It now serves as the front door for those entering the Carnegie Mellon University campus from Forbes Avenue. The building houses a two-story student porch, flexible makerspace, and the 8,000 SF TCS Collaboration Center — and it serves as a keystone for development in the North of Forbes district of the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh.

Acoustical consulting services included recommendations for acoustical treatments throughout the building as well as noise control throughout the facility. Additionally, environmental noise control services for this building were included to support an emergency generator that complies with the City of Pittsburgh Noise Ordinance.
